Western Maryland Building and Construction Trades Council endorses Senator Mike McKay

CUMBERLAND – October 16, 2026

Senator Mike McKay has earned the endorsement of the Western Maryland Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents the union construction trades across Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties.

In its endorsement letter, the Council pointed to McKay’s record: “Senator McKay has demonstrated his willingness to work across party lines and support legislation that benefits working families, strengthens registered apprenticeship programs, improves workplace safety, and protects collective-bargaining rights.”

The Council cited McKay’s vote for the Procurement Reform Act of 2025, which built responsible-contractor practices, apprenticeship opportunities, and strong labor standards into the way Maryland buys public work. It also noted his support for the Davis Martinez Public Employee Safety and Health Act, which strengthened safety enforcement for public employees, and his votes for collective-bargaining rights for BWI Airport fire and rescue employees, qualifying law-enforcement officers, and public-library employees.

“Every worker deserves to get home safe at the end of the day,” McKay said. “An apprenticeship in the trades is a career you can raise a family on, and I want more of those careers here in Western Maryland.”

The Council also credited McKay for staying close to the people he represents, writing that he “has remained accessible and willing to listen to the concerns of union members, contractors, employers, and community leaders throughout our region.”

“These are the men and women who build Western Maryland,” McKay said. “I’m proud to have them with me, and I’ll keep fighting for good-paying work right here at home.”
