Moore, Democrats Put Politics First as Marylanders Pay the Price

The federal government is now shut down — and Maryland families, workers, and small businesses are once again paying the price. With one of the highest concentrations of federal employees and contractors in the nation, Maryland’s economy is uniquely exposed, and this shutdown will hit our state harder than most. It’s another reminder of how dangerously dependent our economy has become on Washington.

Annapolis, Md. – The federal government is now shut down — and Maryland families, workers, and small businesses are once again paying the price. With one of the highest concentrations of federal employees and contractors in the nation, Maryland’s economy is uniquely exposed, and this shutdown will hit our state harder than most. It’s another reminder of how dangerously dependent our economy has become on Washington.

Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey stated:
“Governor Moore would rather posture on cable news and tweet about partisan battles than deal with the reality that Maryland is uniquely vulnerable in a shutdown. Every Continuing Resolution in modern history has required bipartisan cooperation to keep the government open. Instead, Democrats wanted to use this CR to jam through unrelated healthcare policy. That’s reckless. Instead of attacking Republicans, the Governor should have demanded that his allies in Washington work across the aisle to pass a clean resolution and protect Maryland families. The truth is our economy is already lagging behind our neighbors, and Moore’s answer has been to double-down on our dependence on federal spending. That’s a dangerous strategy — and Marylanders are the ones who will pay the price when Washington stumbles.”

Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready added:
“Now that the shutdown is here, the consequences are real. Thousands of Marylanders are missing paychecks, small businesses are feeling the ripple effects, and families are facing needless anxiety. Maryland Democrats must abandon the political theater and focus on governing. They need to prioritize Maryland families first by putting D.C. grandstanding aside and supporting a clean CR to reopen the federal government. Every day they delay makes things more difficult.”
