“Good afternoon, friends, neighbors, and fellow Marylanders—

Today, I’m proud to stand before you and officially announce my re-election campaign for the Maryland State Senate. The paperwork is filed, and now—boots on the ground—we’re heading back to the people, where this journey began.

I come to you not as a career politician, but as a working-class conservative who believes in the enduring strength of faith, family, and freedom. These values are not just words—they are the engine that pulls this great state forward, and they will remain the compass of my service to you.

As we launch this campaign, I’m reminded of a time when American presidents—great leaders like Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower—took to the rails, speaking directly to the people from the caboose of a train. They didn’t hide behind consultants or media filters—they looked voters in the eye, shook their hands, and earned their trust one stop at a time.

That’s exactly how we’ll do it. Town by town, handshake by handshake, we’ll listen, we’ll lead, and we’ll make sure working families have a real voice in Annapolis.

This is your campaign. This is your seat. And with your support, we’ll keep moving Maryland in the right direction—one stop, one story, and one strong stand at a time.

All aboard—because this race is official.

Thank you, God bless you, and let’s hit the trail!”

Our 2025 Fundraiser was a huge success!

Thank you to all of my supporters.

Newly Formed Georges Creek Task Force Holds First Meeting

Georges Creek Task Force Meeting Minutes

June 12, 2025 | 10 am | Office of Senator Mike McKay | Mechanic Street | Cumberland, MD 21502

Present:

  • Senator Mike McKay
  • Mayor Jack Coburn, Town of Lonaconing
  • Mayor Dan Colmer, Town of Barton
  • Laura Freeman-Legge, Town Administrator – Westernport
  • John Kirby
  • Scott Shoemaker, Superintendent – UPRC
  • Bill Valentine
  • Elizabeth Stahlman, Tri County Council for Western Maryland

At 10:00 am, Senator McKay convened the meeting to discuss the Georges Creek Task Force Executive Committee. The Task Force will be responsible for creating a report to address concerns and mitigate future risk from flooding in the Georges Creek Valley of Allegany County, MD as well in the Savage River watershed and dam in Garrett County, MD.

The committee should be lean and action focused and should expect 3 to 4 meetings over the next 6 months. The meeting objective for the day was to discuss structure and an overall timeline, with the outcome being a Maryland General Assembly Report for the 2026 legislative session.

The composition of the Executive Committee was discussed. The members of the Executive Committee will be:

  • Gov. Wes Moore
  • Sen. Mike McKay
  • Mayor Jack Coburn
  • John Kirby
  • Scott Shoemaker
  • Bill Valentine

Tri County Council for Western Maryland will attend the meetings as note-taker and will be responsible for compiling the report.

Subcommittees were discussed; most of the recommendations will be generated by the subcommittees’ work. The framework established is as follows:

  • Towns – to include elected officials and administrators
  • MDE/DNR – permitting, clearing of debris, dredging, etc.
  • County Government – Emergency Management, Emergency Services, Public Works, other public/social services agencies (library, HRDC, DSS, etc.)
  • Infrastructure – County Public Works, Town Public Works, MDOT, UPRC
  • History – Include individuals who were present for 1996 flood & subsequent recovery efforts (Al Feldstein, Mary Beth Pirolozzi, Craig Alexander)

Note: MDE Dam Safety/USCoAE Savage River Dam not included in these categories – is that something that needs to be incorporated into one of these subcommittees?

Following the structure of the 1996 report, the recommendations developed by the subcommittees should be organized into categories of short-term recommendations and long-term recommendations.

Action Items:

  1. Review 1996 Report:
    • Did it get done?
    • If not, why?
    • What are recommendations that are still pertinent?
  2. Start soliciting members for subcommittee participation
  3. Sen. McKay to attend County Commissioners’ Meetings to make the public aware of Task Force and ask for participation.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, July 16 at 9 am.
