Upcoming 2020 Legislative Session
Over the past weeks, I have attended a variety of pre-legislative events throughout District 1C and have enjoyed hearing directly from constituents, business leaders and local elected officials on the issues that matter most to them.
Of course, the recommendations by the Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education, better known as “Kirwan” after the name of the Commission\’s chair, will be the lead issue of the upcoming Legislative Session. Here\’s a quick read on Kirwan if you wanted a bit of background.
I am a strong supporter of public education, and I will be watching this issue very closely. As it stands, Kirwan lays out significant funding increases in public education and both the state and counties will have to increase their spending. At this time, there is no concrete funding plan, which makes me wary. I believe in a high-quality education for every child in the state, but not at the expense of our public safety or public works infrastructure. There is a long way to go before this is a done deal, and rest assured that I will be advocating for our rural communities and fighting for taxpayers and our local governments and business communities.
As always, I encourage you to stay in touch and share your views on anything that matters to you and your family as we move through the 2020 Legislative Session. In the new year, look for more frequent communication from me in the District and in Annapolis. Please stay connected and help me fight for you!
