McKay Named Co-Chair of Economic Stability Commission

I am extremely honored to be named a Co-Chair of the Economic Stability Commission by new House Speaker, Adrienne Jones. This commission evolved from a Study Group with the same name established by the late House Speaker Mike Busch last year. The Study Group hosted several listening sessions across the state over the summer, including two at Allegany College, to hear directly from citizens and front-line service providers about how to strengthen the middle class in Maryland.

I am pleased that Speaker Jones has made a long-term commitment to this initiative by transitioning our study group to a State Commission. It is especially important to me that the voices of our rural communities are heard as we develop a path to financial independence across the state that meets the diverse needs of our struggling families.

Over the coming months, the Commission will meet and process the information gathered at the listening sessions with the goal of developing policy recommendations to advance during the 2020 Legislative Session set to begin in January.

August 28th Economic Stability Listening Session

One of my goals for the August 28th Study Group on Economic Stability’s Listening Session was to ensure that Western Maryland voices were heard, and our friends and neighbors showed up in force with more than 150 people in attendance. We had an incredibly productive afternoon engaged in thoughtful dialogue with front line service providers, those who receive public assistance and the general public about how we can create a path out of poverty and in the middle class for all Marylanders, and especially those in our Western Maryland Communities.

We were thrilled that Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford was able to join us along with other colleagues from the Study Group. Thank you to our friends at Allegany College for hosting!
